| Loraxx frontwoman Arista Strungys is a
screamer, but save the comparisons to prominent female-led noise rock bands. No pancake
make up, no baby doll dresses or vengeful victim lyrics, just focused blasts of
razor-laced ear candy. Strungys plays dissonant, choppy guitar that recalls Gang of Four
and Wire but her most powerful instrument is her amazing screaming voice.Bassist Santosh
Isaac and drummer Elliot Talarico provide Jesus Lizard strength rhythmic muscle and
Strungys can still shout them down. Live the band pummels through a dozen song set list in
around 25 minutes, one raging catharsis after another. "Worn Out," and the
nearly danceable "Porn," from their Steve Albini engineered CD,
"Canada," are tighter and faster than the impressive recordings and newer ones
such as "Dusters," with instantly memorable Rapeman-esque drum and bass
interplay are even stronger.
There is beauty in the dynamics and tension, but it is
fairly brutal stuff and certainly not for everyone. If post-Tortoise noodling is your
thing than check out the new one from hot-as-hell cutie pies Joan of Arc instead. But if
you are still mourning the passing of the aforementioned Lizard and biting your
fingernails waiting for the Naked Raygun CD reissues than Loraxx may be for you.
