The Polkaholics - Polka Can't Die

The Polkaholics
Polka Can't Die

By Katherine Raz

There’s something appaling, and yet so oddly appealing about the things our grandparents did when we were still learning the alphabet. Swing night at the Elk’s Club, bingo, polka. Polka? Yes, Chicago-based trio the Polkaholics is ever-so-adamant about making polka rock your world. With song titles like "Just Say Yes to Oktoberfest," "Polka Coup d’Etat," and "We Drink ‘Cause We Must Polka," the Polkaholics’ new album, Polka Can’t Die, is bound to do just that. But it’s not just polka the Polkaholics are trying to chance, it’s rock music, too.

"We’re trying to bring to Polka a more modern kind of excitement," Polkaholics guitarist Don Hedeker said in a recent Associated Press interview. "To rock are trying to bring more fun."

One thing the Polkaholics haven’t brought to rock music, thankfully, is the accordion. The Polkaholics and other two-steppers like them have replaced the cumbersome instrument with the tried-and-true electric guitar. The result is a jolly, infused oom-pah that sounds part old-world, part rockabilly, and is, for the most part, a hilarious, rockin’ good time.
