Void Where Prohibited
Freakinator

By Katherine Raz

Wow – this is one of the best EPs to come out the Windy City for quite some time. Loud, fast, quirky, and with pictures of, well, freaks in the CD booklet. It’s rare for me to ever use the name of one of my favorite bands in a record review, but Freakinator reminds me of early Butthole Surfers. It’s that lovable mix between punk-rock and surf guitar, cut-up by late-80’s American punk rock drum solos. Color me impressed.

“Kiss Like a Smack,” sounds like an old rockabilly tune. “Freakinator,” is an excellent example of how fill-in guitar work is often more powerful than three power chords in repetition.

Vocalist Kevin Giglinto has a great set of pipes, but exercises a talk-sing sort of restraint, and his quirky lyrics are a refreshing break from a market saturated with schmaltz and machismo.

Overall, Void Where Prohibited is a tight outfit. They’ve only been playing together since 1999, but if you ask me, they sound more rehearsed – older and more seasoned, like perhaps they used to party with the Violent Femmes.

Freakinator comes highly recommended.
