Atlanta Braves is the oldest and continuously running team in Major League Baseball. It is also the only team that has fielded a team for every single season of Major League Baseball. The team came into existence as the Boston Red Stockings in 1870. The team has been through all the shades of baseball, the high and the low. However, throughout the years they have remained as the one constant in baseball. Atlanta Braves is the team that has always been in baseball and will always be.
In 1871 the Boston Red Stockings came into being as one of the nine original members of the National League. In the beginning, they were a dominant force in the League. In fact they won six out of the first eight pennants. In 1875 they won twenty-six consecutive games and also every single home game at the Union Baseball Grounds. In 1883, to tie their identity to Boston, the Red Stockings changed their name to Beaneaters. Toward the end of 1912 the Boston began to be called the Braves. This was because a growing number of fans called the team Doves after the Dovey brothers who were the owners of the team that time.
The Braves team of 1914 was one of the most famous teams in the entire baseball history. The season began with a cold start. The team won only four games and lost eighteen. But they ended in a fiery way by winning fifty-one and losing only sixteen. They went from last place in their league to the first place. In the way they finished ten and a half games ahead of the nearest competitor. They then went on to win the World Series in four games over the heavily favored Philadelphia team. This was the year at the top for Boston Braves. After that a drop in fan support reached the rock bottom in 1952 and the team had no other option than to move to Milwaukee.
The Braves won their first World Series championship In 1957 in Milwaukee. In 1966, once again due to dwindling fan support the Braves were forced to move to Atlanta, Georgia. The year 1974 was memorable as Hank Aaron hit career home run 715 of Dodger's Al Downing. Thus he was placed above Babe Ruth for all time leading home run hitting.
In 1976, Ted Turner purchased the Braves. During the 90's the Braves was recognized as one of the best team dynasties in all of sports as it won ten consecutive divisional pennants as well as the World Series in 1995. Th decade starting with 1991 marked the start of a meteoric rise to the top. They became the first team in Major League history to enter World Series after having finished with the worst record the previous season.
2006 Season Preview:
This season augurs well for the team. The Braves' 14 straight division championships at the end of last season is a major-league record. They have won these with John Schuerholz as general manager and Bobby Cox as manager. The Braves began their quest for the 15th victory in their match against the Dodgers. They won the game with style and that is a good indicator of the things to come.
