There is very little initial information about the Boston Red Sox. Well they played their very first game on April 26, 1901. No one would have ever imagined that someday this team would become one of the most famous baseball team in Major League Baseball history. In the beginning, they were called as the Boston Americans until they change their name in 1908. It was not an easy going for this team and it had certainly its ups and downs. Initially, they started off quite strongly. Well, this team was one of the very first team in the newly founded American baseball League.

Their magic continued for the first eighteen seasons, as they were the most successful team of the American League. The team did remarkably well as it went on to earn first place in six out of those eighteen thrilling seasons. With this staggering record, the team went to the World Series five times and every single time the team was crowned champion. Great management and articulated pitching played significant role in these wins.

There are many great players who could come out of age during their association with this great team. In 1901, Cy Young, joined the Red Sox and played and continued with them for the next eight seasons. During his career Young completed 751 games and threw magnetism, 7,356 innings with a stunning average of 300 innings a season. This guy was the tremendous athlete and he is duly honored by MLB as his name being associated with the prestigious award given to the top pitchers of every season.

In 1914, the team dealt for a young but not so famous player George Herman Ruth. Well, Herman's nicknames included, 'The Bambino' and 'The Babe.' In the beginning Ruth was selected for the minor leagues but for a very short period. Ruth played his maiden major league game on July 11, 1914. This superb player is known for his monster home runs and stunning power hitting. Though, many MLB fans don't know that this remarkable player was one of the best pitchers of his time. Ruth started off well but he could only play in just four games and achieved a 2-1 record. George's following two seasons proved to much more successful. He won eighteen and twenty three games respectively for the 1915 and 1916 seasons. During his tenure, the Red Sox became the World Series Champions. This great sportsman was so highly regarded that he was considered on of the all time best left-handed pitchers in the history of MLB. Boston Red Sox are one of the most distinguished team in the MLB.

2006 Season Preview

The Boston Red Sox will kick off 2006 with Epstein back as General Manager of the team. Remarkably Epstein became the youngest general manager of the team when he took over the Sox at the age of twenty eight. Under Epstein the team thrashed the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2004 World Series and consequently ended eighty six years of extreme frustration and misery for the fans.

Alex Gonzalez is another man who was with the team during that season. Alex was signed up on a one year contract for $3 million. Currently he is in Venezuela playing for his own country. With this addition the look of the Red Sox infield changed completely and made it very strong. With this contract Gonzalez becomes the double play partner for the 2nd baseman Mark Loretta. Mark is also being reunited with his former teammate from the Marlin; Mike Lowell will play on the left side. The team has skilled Gold Glove defenders in as Lowell at third and J.T. Snow the superb force backing Kevin Youkilis at first.

The new list for the Boston Red Sox Top Ten prospects was released in the 13-29 issue of Baseball America. New player in is Andy Marte, he is traded from the Atlanta Braves and Edgar Renteria was exchanged for that. On Dec, 8, 2005, Andy was touted as the number one prospect in the whole organization. Finally the Boston Red Sox consummated the deal with the Cleveland Indians for talented outfielder Coco Crisp as the center fielder.

This season, one of the most watched out event would be Red Sox-Yankees game at the historically significant Fenway Park. Though, for the last three season, Boston have done very well as they compelled their mighty opponents into submission. Well, the team has been practicing for the 2006 season. Like many exciting season, hope this season would be another fire cracker for this team.
