The Florida Marlins are a new franchise. But they have been to the playoffs twice as a wild card. They have a perfect 6-0 in the post-season series too. The National League awarded the Florida franchise to Wayne Huizenga, in 1991. He is the CEO of the movie rental giant Blockbuster. He is also the owner of the Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers. The Florida Marlins opened their game in 1993 with a fabulous 6-3 win over the Dodgers. The opening year was a mixture of good and bad news. The bad news was that the team finished 64-98. But there was also the good news which was that they finished the finishing five games ahead of the Mets in the National League East cellar.
The following years were not much better either. However, Jim Leyland became team manager in 1997. They won the wild card with 92-70 record and went on to take out the Giants and the Braves in the N.L. Playoffs. They also defeated Cleveland's Indians in World Series. This was a win that came on the first of their extraordinary post-season plays. Florida Marlins became the youngest franchise to win a World Championship (fourth season). The team was also the very first Wild Card team in the Major League history to win all.
But then came the disaster. The owner Huizenga began pulling down his championship team as soon as Bud Selig won him the World Series trophy. He sold the best players claiming that the expenses were too high. The team plummeted to a 54-108 season. Thus the Marlins became the first team in history to lose one-hundred games in the very season after winning the World Series.Manager Leyland resigned after the debacle in 1998, and Huzienga sold off the team to businessman John Henry. But the fans took it to be a betrayal and stayed away in droves. In fact by 2002, the Marlins averaged about ten thousand fans per game.
Things improved when the Marlins brought in Jack McKeon to manage and the pitching prospect Dontrelle Willis. The fate of the team has progressively changed after that and the fans are already coming back.
2006 Season Preview
The 2005 season ended in disappointment for the Marlins. The team failure was inexplicable. The team was injected with talents as Delgado. Everyone expected the Marlins to end the season in either first or second slot in the NL East. The Marlins were heavily criticized for performing poorly in the first half of that season. In spite of the fact that players like Cabrera, Willis among others posted good first-half figures.
The Marlins started as one of the favorites to win NL wild-card race. Eventually they went into a slump and consequently lost 12 of their next 14 games. Controversy struck the team as A.J. Burnett was dismissed from the team for having made derogatory remarks about the Marlins and their management as well as the coaching. However, they ended the season on a high by defeating the Braves. Thus the 2006 season promises much action. Do attend the games of the Marlins. Contact your on-line ticket vendor and get the tickets!!
