This is a Major League Baseball franchise with home in Anaheim, California. The team is included in the Western Division of the American League. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are also known as the Halos. However, the official name being as long as it is, most of the times the club is referred to as the Los Angeles Angels.Angels Baseball, L.P., on January 3, 2005 decided that the name would be changed from Anaheim Angels to Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The club's 2005 media guide read:
"The inclusion of Los Angeles reflects the original expansion name and returns the Angels as Major League Baseball's American League representative in the Greater Los Angeles territory." The team's name was changed to Anaheim Angels in 1997 by Disney after it signed the new stadium lease with the Anaheim city. This city owns Angel Stadium. The latest name change rubbed the Anaheim city leaders on the wrong side who proceeded to sue the Angels for breach of contract. What followed was a jury trial, which on February 9, 2006, declared a verdict that upheld the teams decision to change it's name.
Lately the teams has fared better than the reputation it has. In 2004, newly acquired Vladimir Guerrero won American League Most Valuable Player Award for the team as he led from the front to a fourth American League West championship. In the same year, the Angels raged a comeback to overtake the division leading Oakland Athletics during the last few weeks of regular season. They went ahead to claim the title in the next-to-last game.
2006 Season Preview:
The last season was extraordinarily good fort the team. They became the first team in the American League to lead their division. They did so with 5 games still left in the regular season. This was first time that the team had made it to the playoffs in consecutive years. The team beat the New York Yankees in 2005 in the Division Series in a whole of 5 games. Sadly they lost to the eventual World Series Champions Chicago White Sox in the American League Championship Series. The team pitcher Bartolo Colon had a score of 21-8 for the season. He was voted A.L. Cy Young Award winner in 2005. He was only the second Angel to be so honored with the award. (Dean Chance won the award in 1964).
As per the season to come John Lackey has agreed with the Angels on a three-year deal worth a guaranteed $17.01 million. But the fans have saved their loudest cheers for Tim Salmon. He was rewarded for a long, distinguished career spent in Anaheim.Salmon, 37 and comes off a year's layoff because of knee and shoulder surgery. But he hopes to keep going. He is fighting for a spot on the roster. He has anyway been hitting well lately. He was quoted: "Just the fact that it was a goal of mine to come in here and feel like I could compete, I feel I've done that," Salmon said. "I don't know if I've done enough yet or not, but some of those things are out of my hands."
