The New York Mets was established in 1962. They went from being the no-winners to big winners in the span of a decade. The New York Mets and the Houston Astros are sister expansion teams which came from the National League in response to the American League's expansion in 1961.

In the first year the team lost 120 games, which is a MLB record till date. In the following year they lost 111 games, and then 109 games in another year. In 1966 and 1967 the team began to make an impression around a talented group of young players. The pitching staff consisted of future superstars as Jerry Koosman, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver and Tug McGraw. In fact, 1969 is considered the wonder year for the Mets as they won 100 games. First they defeated the Braves and then went against the Orioles. In 1973 they won a total of 82 games but it was enough to conquer NL East. In the first round they upset Cincinnati Reds and then the Oakland A's in the World Series. It would eventually go to seven games with Oakland edging the Mets at last.

The rest of the 70s were a disappointment and similar was the beginning of the 1980s. But in 1984 things started look up when Davey Johnson stepped in as the new manager. The team acquired new star players and started performing at a new level. In 1986, all fell into place with Mets winning 108 games and the division title too. The Mets defeated Houston Astros in the NLCS and headed toward the World Series. Mets also figured that they could dispose of the Boston Red Sox but that never happened. Much drama in between the Mets rallied from behind to win their second World Title and jinx the demoralized Red Sox.

In 1999 the Mets entered the post-season as a wild card team. They advanced to the LCS against rival Atlanta. The drama was overpowering when they came within a run of tying the series for 3-3 after they had fallen behind three games to none. In 2000 the team went one step farther in competitiveness. They whizzed past Giants and Cardinals in the playoffs and earned a trip to the Fall Classic. However, the World Series was a Subway Series for the first in 44 years. The Yankees won all the close games, dispatching the Mets in five.

2006 Season Preview:

This season The Mets look intimidating as if they were the only team that may bring to an end the 14 year rule of the Atlanta Braves at the NL East championships. Fans are eager to see the Mets win the National League. The team has shed 17 members from the one they had last year. But they have strengthened their defense by adding Paul LoDuca and Carlos Delgado to the team roster. Their outfield stands improved with Xavier Nady and Tike Redman. While the other teams have grown weaker, the Mets have grown from strength to strength.

The greatest strength of Mets is its offense and its bullpen. The bullpen has been improved with new setup of men and specialists. The pitching staff also looks great, with Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Steve Trachsel, Victor Zambrano and Aaron Heilman. That gives the Mets the best rotation in the East. One of the prime concerns of the team is Kaz Matsui. He has been very disappointing all season and has accomplished little. The younger ones as David Wright and Jose Reyes are now playing to their second full season. Overall the Mets look great. But lets see how well they bring potential to fruition.
