Alfred Reach joined Colonel John Rogers, to buy out the Worcester Brown Stockings of the National League In 1883. They moved the team to Philadelphia. Phillies was added to the name of the hometown and thus came the oldest name in the NL.The team's first season record was 17-81. And that remained the way for the team to be remembered for a long time. They immediately followed up with remedial measures as appointing Harry Wright as the manager for 1884. The move payed dividends and the Phillies ended third. Their first winning tally stood at 56-54. In 1887, they moved into Baker Bowl and finished one notch up from their previous best positioning.

For a long time the team maintained a healthy reputation. In those ending years of the last century the team actually had three hall of famers: Ed Delahanty, Sam Thompson, and Billy Hamilton. However, at the turn of the century things started going down. Alfred Reach and John Rogers fell out, eventually leading to Reach selling his shares 1902. In fact the team changed nine more times before it will get back to serious gaming. However, in the meantime the star players kept quitting the team. There was Nap Lajoie who changed to Athletics at the turn of the century. Ed Delahanty died the following season and consequently the team was crippled. In fact the worst came in the form of Baker Bowl's leftfield bleachers collapse in 1903. The disaster killed 12 and injured 232.

The team went through a series of bad owners who traded the team for petty little gains without commitment to the team reputation. At last, Robert Carpenter, Jr., bought the team in 1943. He and his son Ruly owned the team till 1982. The father and son took extra-ordinary interest in the team as they made their living completely from the team earnings. In fact, Robert Carpenter conducted a contest for renaming the club. That is how the team came to be known as the Blue Jays during 1944-45. Herb Pennock became the GM in 1943 and gave the team another name-Whiz Kids. The Phillies lost a record 23 straight games in the year 1961. But they bounced back the next year. The team dropped below .500 in 1968. Paul Owens, appointed as GM in 1972 turned things around. Steve Carlton was acquired in 1972. He won the first of a record of four Cy Young Awards. In 1973 Mike Schmidt emerged as the greatest third baseman in baseball history. The Phillies finally won the 1980 World Series. There is no other franchise which has waited so long for its very first World Championship.

2006 Season Preview:

The Phillies had a satisfactory last season. Their past three seasons have been more or less consistent. The Phillies finished a good second behind the Atlanta Braves, who have won the division for last 14 seasons.

Charlie Manuel was the new manager this season. He became the 51st manager on November 4, 2004. The previous manager Wade gave the Phillies their third straight winning season but he couldn't save his job as manager. In the beginning it seemed that the injuries to Jim Thome and pitcher Randy Wolf would leave a void in the side. But thanks to Chase Utley and Ryan Howard the Phillies survived the loss. Jimmy Rollins finished with a spectacular 36-game hitting streak. Bobby Abreu had a great season too. He had 17 walks and a .405 on-base advantage. He is also the only Philly to play almost every game. He also won the Home Run Derby at All-Star game in Detroit. Thus the prospects for this season are looking good.
