The Washington Nationals is one of the Major League Baseball franchise based in Washington, D.C.. The franchise relocated from Montréal, at the end of the 2004 season. In Canada, it was known as Montreal Expos. The team was founded in 1969 as a result of National League Expansion. They played their first season as Washington Nationals in the year 2005. They were initially known as the Washington Senators from 1901 to 1955. They changed their name to Washington Nationals in the year 1956. The team had plans of moving into the city in 2004. A final vote by the D.C. City Council decided upon an agreement entered into by Mayor Anthony A. Williams with MLB which required the city take recourse to public financing for the sake of building a new stadium for the 2008 season.
The team will play their games during the years 2005 to 2007 at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium. The stadium was renovated to accommodate the team. The team have been playing in different parks as their varied home stadiums. For example in Jarry Park in 1969 - 1976, it was at Montreal. From 1977 to 2004 the team played at Olympic Stadium which was also in Montreal.
The color of the team uniform is a combination of Red, White and Blue. There is also the logo design of a shield with a baseball, on top is etched ''WASHINGTON NATIONALS.'' The team has scarcely won the Division Title, once in 1981 and again in 1994. They had their first home victory as a franchise at Jarry Park on April 14, 1969.
On September 29, 2004, they played their last game in Montréal. Sadly they lost to Florida Marlins with 31,395 fans at the Olympic Stadium. Few months later New York Mets defeated them 8-1 at Shea Stadium. And that was the final game of the Montréal Expos as a franchise. It was in Dec. 2004, that the DC and MLB together agreed to a finance $400 million baseball stadium for the former Expos to move to DC. DC has chosen a site near Southeast for the new stadium for Washington Nationals.
The stadium is surrounded by N, Potomac Avenue, the 1st, and the South Capitol. There is also the Navy Yard Metro station which is one block to the north. DC officials also are now seriously evaluating the eight private financing schemes which have been submitted for extended construction.
