It's time to grab your tickets and soar with one of the hardest-fighting teams on the NBA circuit- come get your tickets to see the Atlanta Hawks zoom onto the court and blow you away with some truly phenomenal basketball. These guys are the rebels, the black sheep, the team that one minute is one of the worst in the league and the next is knocking over record-breaking teams with ease. Unpredictable yet highly talented, the Hawks are one team you should always have your eye on.
The Atlanta Hawks first hit the courts in 1946 as the Tri-Cities Blackhawks. Despite being under the hand of one of the NBA's most legendary coaches Red Auerbach, the Hawks soon established themselves as one of the worst teams in the league. They were soon shifted to St.Louis and things began to turn around- with a number of prize acquisitions and smart trades, the Hawks entered the finals but lost to the Celtics. The next year in 1958, the Hawks entered the finals against the Celtics yet again and won, chalking up their only championship victory.
The next few seasons would prove to be symbolic of the Hawks and their game. They would continue to be strong contenders in the playoffs, playing some sizzling matches and entering into the playoffs while clinching a number of divisional titles. But the championship became elusive. After a number of years of this kind of near miss play, the Hawks decided that they needed to rebuild. In 1968, the team would shift to Atlanta and become the Atlanta Hawks.
In 1977, the team was bought by Ted Turner and Bernie Bickerstaff was called in to coach, Again, the Hawks played well but couldn't cut it into the finals. For a number of years, this would be the trend, with the Hawks playing impressively but not making past the finals. Soon, the trend began to take a turn for the worst.
By the new millennium the Hawks had become the worst team in the league- a steady decline in playing had contributed to this. The team that once upon a time played with fire seemed to have lost its passion over the years. By the 2004-2005 season, they had the infamous distinction of having a paltry 13 victories in hand.
In keeping with the Hawks tradition, they have shown signs of rising again with a fresh new roster and loads of young talent that is just raring to go. As always, the Hawks manage to return from the most unlikeliest depths and reach dizzying heights and the new season looks like it will be no exception.
