The Celtics were formed in 1946 and were one of the teams that were merged into the NBA when the BAA was dissolved. Initially the Celtics struggled to find their footing but they would find a worthy coach in Red Aurbach, who would lead the team to a number of victories. The team would also be helped by the acquisition of a number of star players like Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and K.C Jones. The three of them would lead the first of the Celtics winning dynasties, winning a mind-blowing eight consecutive championship wins, a record that has yet to be broken.

By 1968, the key players were becoming old and bogged down with injuries. A new roster of players was rebuilt, strongly infused with a plethora of new talent. The result was the birth of another dynasty that would last eight years. After winning the championship in 1976, the team went into another phase of rebuilding and acquired their best player in 1978, a young man called Larry Bird.Bird would soon be joined by two other star players- Robert Parish and Kevin McHale. This trinity would be another powerhouse- the Celtics won yet another championship in 1981 and would have one of the best teams in NBA history in 1986.

It was during the eighties that the Celtics and the Lakers simmered in one of the hottest on-court rivalries in sports history. The two have come head to head in no less than three NBA finals and their games were peppered with some passionate and sometimes bitter plays. In 1986, the Celtics would win their last championship title before slipping into a down-phase. By the end of the eighties, the star trio was ready to retire and the Celtics found it difficult to maintain that winning groove. Things were not helped by the fact that a number of promising new players died under unfortunate circumstances. The team found it difficult to maintain even a semblance of mediocrity- even their rivalry with the Lakers began to cool.

During the '96-'97 season, the Celtics had a season worst franchise record and a season worst NBA record. Another rebuilding was set in motion, breaking up the old team and adding a number of new players, a move that was initially criticized. Things have been improving gradually for the team and the Celtics hope to build another winning dynasty soon.
