The Sun began to play starting in the 2003 WNBA season. They were the first WNBA franchise ever to be totally owned by any party other than that of an NBA team owner. The team is owned by the legendary Mohegan Indian tribe. Earlier from the year 1999 to the year 2002, the name by which the team was known was Orlando Miracle. It used to play in the city of Orlando, in Florida. Currently the team for home games sports the color white with bright sun red on the sides and a very prominent red Sun logo text on centre the chest. For their away games they sport blue colors with bright sun red with neat yellow trim on their sides and the prominent yellow Sun logo text which happens to be on the chest. Apart from this the Sun logo is displayed prominently on the shorts.
The Sun originally used to be called the Orlando Miracle. Then they had begun play in the main WNBA from1999 and continuously played their games at the renowned TD Waterhouse Centre. Starting of October of 2002, they had announced their plans to move out of their base in Orlando, Florida. On the 28th of 2003, Connecticut was publicly announced as their new location where the team would move. Before getting themselves renamed as the Connecticut Sun the team begun the first season of tournament play. The team had earlier acquired the former University of Connecticut brightest star Rebecca Lobo. The Sun unfortunately lost their first game to the Houston Comets in a close encounter. However, the very next season would also find the Connecticut Sun win their first initial playoff series with resounding victory over the formidable Charlotte Sting. After that the team has only looked ahead and given great performances which has considerably increased their fan following.
Since recently moving to Connecticut, the talented team has often been a great success both on and while off the court. The number of team's attendance has considerably risen each year after its arrival in Connecticut area and in the year 2005 the Sun successfully hosted the 2005 edition of WNBA All-Star game.
