The Nuggets started off as the Denver Larks in the ABA and was originally slated to shift to Kansas City. They soon changed their name to the Rockets and established themselves as a powerhouse of sorts, managing to clinch division titles in 1970 and 1975. After holding a contest to come up with a different name, the team entered the NBA as the Denver Nuggets.

The Nuggets were fortunate enough to have the amazing Larry Brown coaching them initially and he helped bring out the best in the team, bringing them some of their best seasons in the ABA as well as a chance at the finals. When the Nuggets joined the NBA in 1975, they maintained a strong advantage over many other teams, helped by a strong team that boasted the likes of Bobby Jones, Dan Issel and David Thompson. Though the team would win division titles during their first two seasons in the NBA, they would not make it to the finals.

Coach Brown left the Nuggets in 1979 and as is expected when a team loses a strong leader, the performance of the Nuggets diminished considerably. Things would only turn around in 1981 when Doug Moe took over the reigns as head coach. Moe decided to apply a different style of playing, initiating the run-and-gun method of playing which is basically offence-oriented with its main focus being on making quick baskets. The result was a highly competitive and effective game strategy that helped the Nuggets easily chalk up at least a hundred points per game. Though this made for some great basketball, the team was still unable to make it to the playoffs and Moe eventually left the team.

The nineties were bleak for the Nuggets as they failed to find their footing after Moe's departure and were seen as a winded team by many. Things dipped to all-time lows when they chalked up a season record of eleven wins in 82 games during the '97-'98 season. At the same time however, the Nuggets had drafted two of the most promising rookies in the NBA and their presence would prove to be invaluable to the team.

By the 2003-2004 season with some new talent on the team, the Nuggets recorded an impressive number of wins and made it to the playoffs. Things got better the following year with the team clinching the Northwest Division title and seeding impressively in the western conference.
