The Lakers would lose the NBA championships to the Celtics six times in eight years until 1972 when coach Sharman helped lead the Lakers to a championship victory. Their next championship would come in 1979 with players like Kareem Abdul Jabbar and Magic Johnson leading the fray.

The eighties completely belonged to the Lakers as they stormed passed almost every team, clinching the championships five times, two times consecutively. Unfortunately things took another turn in the nineties with many voicing the opinion that the teams that were being fielded were not good enough to contend for the championships. Things only changed in the '96-'97 season when a new coach Phil Jackson was brought in along with star players Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant. Tension between these players resulted in trades and the departure of Jackson, which resulted in poor team performances, Jackson was brought back for the 2005-2006 season and the Lakers have improved dramatically, rekindling the hopes that they may yet again take another championship victory home.

The Lakers also boast of a star-studded fan base that has also made the Lakers game a venue to 'be seen. Though many celebrities are simply fair-weather fans, the team boasts of some hardcore fans like Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Andy Garcia, Edward Norton and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
