If you consider yourself a real basketball fan then you absolutely have to get your tickets to see the New York Knicks work their magic on center court. The Knicks have a strong tradition of top class basketball behind them and even when they are down, the Knicks play with a pride and spirit that one does not see in many teams. No basketball season is complete without watching at least one Knicks game.
The Knicks are one of the most respected and oldest teams on the NBA circuit. The team, along with the Boston Celtics is one of the only teams that are still playing from its original home city. Originally part of the BAA, the team merged with the NBA way back in 1949. In the beginning, the Knicks were largely seen as a team that delivered competent, watch-able basketball- they were not spectacular but the fans respected them and you could trust the Knicks to make it to the playoffs.
This slow but steady run lasted till about 1960, after which the Knicks began going through a rough phase that would last for six years. Aside from winding up at the bottom of the barrel every year in the Eastern Division, the Knicks clocked in some of their worst losses in history during this time. However things were about to change- new players had been added to the roster and a new coach named Red Holzman was ready to shake things up. The team got a much needed booster shot with the addition of Willis Reed to the team, a young man who would go on to be a real asset to the team. The Knicks went on to win their first NBA title that season and would continue to do well until Reed would retire and leave the team.
Again the fortunes of the Knicks dipped and things were not helped by the loss of Holzman, one of their best coaches. The Knicks were scraping the bottom of the barrel again until Patrick Ewing was drafted during the '84-'85 season, an addition that helped the Knicks snag their first division title in twenty years. In order to boost things further, a new coach was called in who honed the Knicks into a team that had a hard defensive drive. As with Reed, the team would be able to keep a steady drive until Ewing left the team as well.
The result was a quick downhill spiral- despite a number of overhauls, shuffles and trades the Knicks could not find their groove and found themselves slipping yet again to the bottom of the division. Though many consider the Knicks to be the worst NBA team today, the team still manages one of the highest payrolls and has made some smart moves in recent times, readjusting the roster to include younger players with talent and drive. It is just a matter of time before the Knicks begin to shine once again.
