Come see one of the NBA's most phenomenal teams take center court and bring the roof down with their signature brand of cutting edge basketball- get your tickets to see the Philadelphia 76ers live on court! This team maintains a lofty position as being one of the most respected teams on the NBA circuit but their history is dotted with as many falls as there have been highs.
The Philadelphia 76ers of the Sixers, as they are known is the oldest franchise in the NBA. Their origins date back to 1939 when they were known as the Syracuse Nationals. In 1949 the team joined the NBA and they immediately started a new decade of dream basketball, becoming a strong playoff contender as well as upsetting some of the biggest players on the circuit. Unfortunately, the team would never make it to the finals.
By the sixties, a number of teams that had been situated in small towns were shifted to larger, more lucrative venues. The team was sold and moved the Philadelphia where a name change was also instituted, changing the name to the 76ers in keeping with the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. The name was soon shortened to the Sixers by the media.
The '66-'67 year was the best year the Sixers ever had. Chalking up the best league record at that time, the Sixers also managed to crack the eight-year championship winning streak of the Boston Celtics. With a team of all-star players and exquisite playing, the team was voted the best team in league history. But what goes up must come down- after some painful trades, the Sixers found themselves slipping, hitting an all-time low when they gained the distinction of having the record for the most losses in a season.
Things picked up a bit in the '76-'77 season when the team came under new ownership but they tended to fluctuate- still, they managed to play some extremely hard-driven basketball when they met their rivals the Celtics in the finals once again. They lost but they had played some very inspiring basketball in the process. Things went well for the team into the eighties though the team had a dismal season in '83-'84. The addition of Charles Barkley to the team boosted the Sixers tremendously but he was traded off in the nineties, resulting in some disastrous plays for the following seasons.
In the new millennium the team acquired some star players and was able to make some headway in terms of their game. Despite having a few internal disputes, the team has managed to stay afloat and look like a steady team to look for in the future.
