The Kings are a team that has been shifted around a number of times before settling at present in Sacramento. Its beginnings can be traced back to 1945 when it was a member of the NBL under the moniker the Rochester Royals. The team did very well, managing to clinch the 1946 NBL title before it was shifted to the BAA in 1948. The Royals continued to play well and garnered their first ever NBA championship victory in 1951- a feat the Kings still haven't been able to repeat despite having a strong team.

In 1957 the team was shifted to Cincinnati where the team managed to play well but was unable to make it to the finals. In 1972, the team was relocated yet again, this time to Kansas, where the team changed their name to the Kings. Still the team couldn't distinguish itself- after a surprising appearance in the playoffs in the '80-'81 season, the Kings were on the road to Sacramento. The early years of the team in Sacramento were not remarkable- a run of plain bad luck and poor management helped keep the team firmly at the bottom of the barrel. Things would only change in the nineties when a change in management heralded a new era for the Kings.

With the acquisition of a number of key players, the Kings' game improved tremendously, so much so that they were regular contenders at the playoffs. Added to this was a new style of playing called the 'Princeton Offence' which was a combination of run-and-gun play and quick ball movement. The result was a flashy, entertaining play that also scored points. Despite having a relatively poor defense, the Kings were soon the epitome of perfect basketball and fans were flocking to their games just for the thrill of watching them play.

The new millennium has been one of great change for the team as they have seen some of their best talent traded away. In return the team seemed to have acquired unknown, young talent and the effects were seen in the beginning of the 2005-2006 season with a lack of chemistry within the team leading to poor performances. However with the addition of some new talent the team was soon able to turn this around.
