The College of Charleston is a municipal university situated in historic city center Charleston, South Carolina. It was established in 1770 and granted the deed in 1785. Thus it is the oldest public college of the country. The founders of this institution comprise three men of the Declaration of Independence and amongst the fathers of United States Constitution. True to its history is its athletics programme. Among the teams its basketball side is a huge crowd puller.
The college's motto is to promote and institute youth in the various branches of liberal life. It encourages sports as a means of overall personal development of the students. Its athletic teams, which play a part in the NCAA Division I of Southern Conference, are branded as the Cougars. The College's most excellent and acknowledged athletic line up is men's basketball. Their team secured the NAIA national honor in 1983 and reached to the NCAA Tournament four times (1994, 1997, 1998 and 1999). The credit for such a massive success is attributed to former head coach John Kresse, after whom their ground is named.
The student fans from the college are famous for their fervent support. The Cougars are going to begin their 18th season at the John Kresse Arena, the Mitchell Johnson Physical Education Center. This multi-million sports ground opened on Aug. 30, 1982. This 95,200 square foot brick coating edifice made of hardwood maple, houses the physical instruction and sports facilities. It includes offices, classrooms, laboratories, a schooling room, volleyball and badminton courts, weight rooms, eight racquetball courts, men and women's locker rooms and watching gallery. The basketball dome has a capacity of 3,500 viewers.
