A college sports powerhouse, famous in basketball in the NAIA; now it is a new member of NCAA Division I and competes in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The university has an ongoing sports rivalry with Belmont University, just 3 miles down the road from Lipscomb. Traditionally basketball games between the two schools are called the Battle of the Boulevard. In 2006, the rivalry reached a new level when Belmont and Lipscomb advanced to the finals of the Atlantic Sun tournament at the Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tennessee, with the winner earning its first-ever bid to the NCAA tournament. Belmont won 74-69 in overtime. Lipscomb was invited to the National Invitation Tournament as the regular-season conference champion, losing in its first game.
What's happening!!!
On Mar 1 2007, at JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Eddie Ard and Brian Fisk each scored 17 points as Lipscomb rolled to an easy 85-49 victory over Mercer in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference basketball tournament on Thursday night. Fourth-seeded Lipscomb (18-12) moved into Fridays semifinals, where it will take on top-seeded East Tennessee State University at 7 p.m. EST.
Mercer (13-17) struggled to keep pace in almost every facet of the game in the first half as Lipscomb methodically built its lead with better shooting, rebounding, passing, defense and by taking better care of the ball. The Bisons jumped out to a 23-7 lead and never looked back, gradually stretching it to 47-26 at the break. It was more of the same in the second half as the Bisons continued to pull away, even after liberal substitutions. Lipscomb hit 33-of-57 from the field for 58 percent and were 8-of-16 from 3-point land for 50 percent. Trey Williams added 11 points, five assists and three steals and Michael Lusk had 10 points.
But on Mar 2 2007, JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Courtney Pigram scored 21 points as East Tennessee State defeated Lipscomb 77-72 Friday night in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament. Top-seeded ETSU (24-8) will play second-seeded Belmont in Saturday's 4 p.m. championship game. The winner earns the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
Lipscomb (18-13) was led by Brian Fisk's 20 points. Trey Williams added 19, all in the second half, for the Bisons. Lipscomb led by as many as seven points in a highly competitive first half before ETSU then went on a 17-10 run to close the half. Pigram's 3-point basket just before the buzzer made it 35-35, the eighth tie of the first half. Pigram continued early in the second half to put ETSU up 38-35. When Nuckles scored inside to make it 40-35, ETSU never gave up the lead.
Lipscomb pulled within one on a tip-in by Fisk, who was fouled while scoring with a minute left, but he missed a free throw that would have tied the game. So now let's wait and watch what strategy Lipscomb is gonna play to win it hands down!!!
