The Georgia Force is Atlanta based team of Arena Football League, that plays in the Southern Division pf the National Conference. The team originally began as the first Nashville Kats team from 1997 to 2001. the original Kats played in the Gaylord entertainment Center in downtown Nashville. Eddie Khayat was the team coach in 1997 and 1998, who was succeeded by Pat Sperduto for the rest of the team's time in Nashville. In their inaugural year of 1997, the Kats were the league's Organization of the Year. During their brief period of existence, they were in the playoffs for every season. The Kats also palyed in the ArenaBowl for each of their final two season, albeit losing both times they reached the AFL's Championship game.
In the December of 2001, the franchise was purchased by Virgil Williams, an Atlanta businessman, for nearly $10 million (US). The team moved to Atlanta with its new owner as the previous owners failed to negotiate a favorable lease with the Arena's primary tenant and manager, the National Hockey League's Nashville Predators.
The rechristened Force initially played in Atlana's downtown Philips Arena, which happens to be the home of Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Thrashers, teams of National Basketball Association. Later the team relocated to suburban Duluth and began playing in the Arena at Gwinnett Center for the 2003 and 2004 seasons.
The team made the playoff one time in 2003, under the three year ownership of William. In September of 2004, after the team was sold to Arthur Blank. He was one of the founders of Home Depot. He also owned the Atlanta Falcons franchise in the National Football League. In early 2006, he withdrew his name from contention as a potential buyer of Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves. It was announced that the franchise would return back to the downtown Philips Arena for the 2005 season. This decision was in response to the fan desires as expressed in a poll. In 2005, the Nashville Kats made a return to the league, acquiring all of the previous history from the Force. This made the franchise a 2002 expansion team. The 2005 season was recorded as the most successful in team history. The highlights included the conference-best 11-5 record, and undefeated home record (8-0), a National Conference Championship and a trip to ArenaBowl XIX.
The official mascot of Georgia Mascot used to be a high tech runner named G-Force. Present mascot of the team is blue, cuddly monster named Blu.
The Georgia Force has re-signed two of its previous players, DS Willie Gary and OL/DL Abdul-Salam Noah. Gary is University of Kentuchy product who played in 14 of 16 regular season games. He recorded 53.5 tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, four pass defenses and one interception. During four seasons with the Force, he has achieved 253 tackles which made him the all-time leading tackler in franchise history.
Noah, 6-2, 280 pounds, collected 10 tackles, two sacks, one fumble and pass defense in 15 games in 2006. his career records 33 tackles, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, three pass defenses and three in three seasons. Noah was acquired on March 20, 2006, in trade with Kansas City.
