The Las Vegas Gladiators were previously known as the New Jersey Red Dogs. Alongwith the New York CityHawks and the Nashville Kats the Gladiators made their entry into the AFL Championship in 1997. E. Burke Ross, the famous New Jersey radio entrepreneur owned the New Jersey Red Dogs. Ross embarked on including many ex-NFL (National Football League) players like Harry Carson, Carl Banks, and Joe Morris.
The New Jersey Red Dogs played their home games at the Continental Airlines Arena situated in the New Jersey Meadowlands. The New Jersey Red Dogs won 8 of their first 9 games. John Hufnagel was the coach of the team then. John himself was a quarterback as well as an offensive coordinator of the Calgary Stampeders that participated in the Canadian Football League. Moreover, John also possessed years of experience of coaching several National Football League teams. The New Jersey Red Dogs played under this name till 2000.
The New Jersey Red Dogs was then sold to the Miami lawyer Jim Ferraro. Ferraro changed the team name and made it the New Jersey Gladiators. Lary Kuharich was appointed the coach of the team. In 2001 the New Jersey Gladiators performed their worst winning only 2 games out of 14 games they played. The team appointed a new coach namely Frank Haege who was later removed from his post following his violation of rules at the af2 salary cup.
In 2003 the New Jersey Gladiators was relocated Las Vegas and took the new name the Las Vegas Gladiators. They started playing their home games at Thomas and Mark Center which was situated on the campus of the University of Nevada. The Las Vegas Sting also played their home games at this venue during 1994-95. The official mascot of the Las Vegas Gladiators is a lion called Thraxx that wears a Gladiator uniform.
