New York Dragons, Arena Football League team is based in Uniondale, New York. The team competes in the Eastern division at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum which is also home to the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League. The official mascot of the Dragons is the dragon called Sparky, who is also the mascot for NHL's New York Islanders. They are coached by former Barnstormer defensive back Weylan Harding.

The team was founded in 1995 and were based in Des Moines, Iowa. The team played successfully as Iowa Barnstormers from 1995 to 2000. They reached the Arena Bowl in 1996 and 1997. The team was later purchased by Charles Wang, the majority owner of the Islander's. The team folded after 2001 season. The Barnstormers were best noted for their unique uniforms which depicted goggles on the helmets, propellers on the pant legs and wings on shoulders. Jim Foster who is the inventor of Arena Football and Kurt Warner, was one of the chief figures in the original Iowa Organization. Jim won both NFL MVP award and the MVP for Super Bowl XXXIV.

The desire for a larger market and lack of Des Moines venue led to the relocation of the team. The Barnstormers management wanted construction of a better facility during their time in Des Moines, however that did not materialize. In September 2004, Islanders' ownership announced the renovation of the Nassau Coliseum, surrounding it with housing units and construction of adjacent tower. In 2005, the Wells Fargo Arena was opened in Des Moines, directly across from what the locals call "Vets", as part of the Iowa Events Center. Unfortunately, it was too late to keep the Barnstormers there.

Though the Dragons won their division title in 2004, they failed to make the playoffs. With the 2006 season, Weylan Harding,in his first two seasons as a coach, was a popular Arena Football League coach. He won 20 games throughout the 2005 and 2006 seasons. The Dragons won the division titles in 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2004, 2005. Aaron Garcia, one of the biggest stars in Arena Football is a part of the Dragons. Aaron is a quarterback and has the honor of most touchdown (11) passes in a game. He is known for his over 750 touchdown passes in his 10 years career span. In 2001 season, he set the record of 104 touchdown passes.

In 2001 season, the Dragons set the league record for most points in a game, where they scored 99 against the Carolina Cobras. Also, it set the record of the most points (167) scored in one game. In 2002 season, head coach John Gregory made a bold decision of putting the former New York Giants quarterback Danny Kanell to start the second half replacing Matt Nagy. The game is remembered as the "Kanell Comeback".

In 2005 season, the Dragons won streak to four games and put them atop the AFL with a 5-1 record. Rob Bironas blocked to nail a 32-yard field goal with 15 seconds left on the clock as the Dragons upend the eventual National Conference Champions. It was a back and forth affair that had a little bit of everything.

In 2006 season, the Dragons won against Utah Blaze 84-81 on the road. With this they made the AFL history for the second most points (165) in a game.

In July 2006, The New York Dragons named Chris Bauer as the Director of Player Personnel. "It was an honor to be offered this opportunity by Coach Harding and such a quality organization," said Bauer. "I hope to help build on the tremendous foundation established here on Long Island by Coach Harding and his staff."
