The Tampa Bay Storm is the flagship franchise of Arena Football League. The teams holds the record for having won the ArenaBowl Championships in 1991, 1993, 1995, 1996, and 2003. The Storm are always keep the flow of game going throughout the soring ans into the summer. They start their season in late January immediately following the National Football League season. Presently they play in the St. Pete Times Forum on Tampa's downtown waterfront, which also happens to be the home to National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning. The Strom shares the Arena record for the longest tenure by a franchise in a single market area, with their traditional rivals, the Orlando Predators. Out of Chicago Bruisers, Denver Dynamite and Washington Commandos, Tampa Bay Storm were the only one to have operated in continuous existence since the formation of the league in 1987 until present.

The franchise was originally known as the Pittsburgh Gladiators. They were among the original four AFL teams formed in 1987. The Gladiators participated in Arena Bowls I and III, but faced defeat in both. The team moved from Pittsburgh to St. Petersburg in 1991, with the team taking the nick name Storm. The Gladiators has since then become the nickname of Las Vegas franchise, the Las Vegas Gladiators. The Storms won their first ArenaBowl the first Tampa Bay season in 1991 and since then they have won four subsequent championship. Up to the 2006 season, the Sorms have successfully qualified for the playoffs in every season of their Tampa Bay existence. From 1991-1996, team has played in the former Florida Suncoast Dome in St. Petersburg, which is now called as Tropicana Field, and hence became its first regular team sports tenant. The Storm shifted their arena to St. Pete Times Forum, in Tampa, where it continuous to play its home game till present.

The Storm competes in Southern Division of the National Conference. On December 23, 2004, Sports Illustrated wrote in its 'The 10 Spot' feature that the AFL'S players union field a grievance against the Storm. The reason: Seven of Storms players claimed that some of the diamonds of their 2003 AFL championship rings were fake. After 2003 season, six of seven players have made their exit from the team. The team ended the 2006 season with 7-9 reacord, securing the fourth position in their division, outing an end to the 19 year streak of palyoff appearances, dating since their as the Pittsburgh Gladiators and the start of the Arena Football League.

The teams coach Tim Marcum is the AFL's all-time best coach with its longest tenure in AFL history. The Denver Dynamite, under his guidance, led to the first ArenaBowl championship in 1987. The success continued with Detroit Drive making five ArenaBowl appearances. Marcum had the same success rate was with Tampa Bay, leading them to four appearances during the short course of his career. Gary Mullen was another gem who played for the Tampa Bay Storm during the 1994 season. Joe March led the AFL in sacks during his rookie season, which he continued to dominate until his retirement in 1997. march won ArenaBowl rings with Storm from 1993-96 and ended his career with Nashville in 1997. The current mascot of the Tampa Bay Storm is a dog named Storm Dawg.
