This football team of the Air Force Academy plays in blue and silver with a unique lightning bolt on the helmet. Their mascot is a flying falcon and their fight song is 'The US Air Force', which is also the song of the Air Force. The Falcons share the usual rivalry with the Army and Navy, butting heads with these two for the annual Commander-in-Chief Trophy. Though the Falcons have been the clear dominating force here for a number of years, winning the trophy a mind-boggling sixteen times, of late the Navy has been dominating the scene, with the Falcons falling to both the Army and Navy in recent times. The Falcons also share a rivalry with Colorado State University.
The Falcons have a distinct advantage in the Academy itself, which is located over two thousand meters above sea level, making it a grueling and demanding area for training. This often gives them the advantage over other teams who do not train at such high altitudes. With regard to playing tactics, the Falcons are known for their traditional option attack, which has made them one of the best rushing teams in the country. With the acquisition of Fisher DeBerry as coach, the team has certainly made a name for itself, ranking in the nation's top ten teams a whopping nineteen times. Since the late nineties, the team has won sixty-three games and become one of the most successful teams in recent years. The team has also produced no less than thirty-nine Academic All-Americans and NFL players like Chris Gizzi, Dave Lawson, Ernie Jennings and Ben Miller. Till date, the Falcons' '85 season is seen as their best with eleven consecutive wins, during which they were ranked number two in the country and were a shade away from clinching the National Championships.
In recent years, the Falcons have been struggling a little- they recently came off of their worst season in twenty-two years and DeBerry was recently in the middle of a scandal regarding some racist remarks made towards African-American players.
