The University of Akron is the home of the Zips- the name is actually a shortened term for 'Zippers', which were a kind of overshoe that was popular in the twenties and thirties and was a product of Akron. Their mascot is Zippy the Kangaroo, one of the two female mascots that exist in the United States today. The Zips share a rivalry with Kent State University, who they battle with for the Wagon Wheel. They also lock horns with Youngstown State University for the Steel Tire.
In 2005, the Zips won their very first MAC Championship- though they lost to the University of Memphis for the Motor City Bowl, the team was very much on cloud nine as they had raked in one of their most successful season's in the University's history. Even though they lost, they were the second team in history to sell out their allotted number of tickets- pretty impressive for any team! Under the able hand of coach J.D. Brookhart, the Zips are looking poised to grab more laurels this year and fans are rooting for them to deliver another stunning season.
This year the line-up for the Zips looks like a real winner- many players from the 2005 squad make a comeback, most notably Luke Getsy, the gutsy quarterback. Though admittedly Getsy was shaky at the outset, he has since proved himself to be nothing short of fantastic at the helm of the team's offensive line-up. The team has gotten this far due to nothing else but a tremendous amount of hard work, which has really paid off in the end. Now the team needs to prove how well they can play with the added weight of a conference title to live up to.
In the current line up, some players to watch for include Kris Kaspereck, who might be making more of an impression on the field after being the team's leading receiver, grabbing five catches for thirty-five yards. Dennis Kennedy has singled himself out as one of the best running backs, earning accolades from the coach himself. Another player to look out for would be Mark Groza who has made some impressive defensive plays of late. With regards to injuries, Jermaine Reid and Chevin Pace both look to be well enough to return in the fall.
