Get ready to touch the summit of college football with tickets to see the Appalachian State Mountaineers live in action on the field. The Mountaineers don't just have a National Championship title to their name, they have one of the most exciting young teams on the circuit, a team that has already proven itself and held its own with teams of far more experienced players.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers are part of the Appalachian State University athletics program and sport the colors black and gold. Their mascot is a mountaineer called Yosef. The Mountaineers have pretty much been the underdogs for a while- nobody really expected them to make any significant strides in the football arena and yet these boys kept working at it until they got themselves noticed.
Perhaps most worthy is their performance during the 2005 season, not only because they managed to snag the National Championships that year but because they made some truly stellar plays and had some talented young players working the field at the time. The 2005 Mountaineer team was distinctly different from the teams of the past and the difference showed in the games.
Some of the names that made a mark for the Mountaineers were players like Kevin Richardson and the dynamic duo of Jason Hunter and Corey Lynch who added some solid structure to the defensive line-up. Richie Williams made some truly spectacular plays and after he was out with an injury, Trey Elder came forth and firmly led the Mountaineers to some memorable victories. Of all these players, Hunter will perhaps be best remembered for his almost-miraculous fifteen-yard fumble recovery as well as ten great tackles.
During that season, the Mountaineers notched up some very impressive wins against teams like Kentucky and Coastal Carolina. They also had a strong and solid defense, a stupendous running game and arguably some of the best quarterbacks of that season. Many people have gone on to label the Mountaineers the weakest of the championship teams but that is not a very fair assessment. With such a hard-fought run to their current place, the Mountaineers are easy contenders for being one of the toughest fighters in the league today.
No doubt a repeat of a National Championship win might prove a little difficult for the Mountaineers this year, especially with players like Hunter and Williams leaving the team. But Elder and Richardson are still in the running and have the added game experience that will prove to be invaluable to an otherwise very young team. Despite these odds, the Mountaineers surely are strong contenders for being one of the top ten pre-season teams of 2006.
