The Razorbacks is the football team that belongs to the University of Arkansas Athletic program. Also known as the Hogs, the term Razorbacks usually refers to the football team unless otherwise specified. The Razorbacks are sometimes also known as the Hogs. The team was initially formed under the moniker Arkansas Cardinals and during their first year of play, they took an immense pounding from the Texas Longhorns, suffering a 54-0 loss. This game would prove to be significant as it was to be the first in a long series of games in a very heated rivalry that would grow between the Longhorns and the Razorbacks. By 1909, the team's play had picked up quite a bit, so much so that the coach claimed they played like a band of wild razorback hogs. The following year the name was changed and in the twenties, the characteristic 'Woo, Pig! Sooie!' was initiated.

In 1936 the team won their first ever South West Division title and in 1946 they won the Cotton Bowl, their first such win. Perhaps the team's most notable coach was Frank Broyles who stayed with the team for twenty years. Broyles led the Razorbacks to a National Championship win and by 1969 the team was ranked number two- the Longhorns were ranked number one. In one of the most famous matches in the teams' rival history, the Razorbacks and Longhorns came face to face in a game that has since gone down as 'The Big Shootout'- even Richard Nixon was there. The Razorbacks played brilliantly, leading 14 to nothing until the fourth quarter after which the Razorbacks lost in a nail-biting 15-14 game.

After that closely fought game, the rivalry that exists between the Razorbacks and Longhorns has always been a heated one, especially from the Razorbacks side. In truth, the Longhorns consider their rivalries with Texas A&M and Oklahoma more important but the Arkansas fans and media always get worked up when the two teams meet, something the Texas fans often find surprising. Though the two teams haven't met on the field as much of late, there are a series of games that will be held in 2008. Texas currently lead in this rivalry with 55 wins against Arkansas' 21.

Whether they are playing the Longhorns or not, you can be sure to see some stellar college ball from the Razorbacks so don't wait! Get to your online ticket vendor today and order your tickets to see the Arkansas Razorbacks in action!
