The Eagles football team is affiliated to the athletics program at Boston College and is currently a part of the Atlantic conference, though they are one of the founding members of the Big East Conference. Its colors are maroon and gold and its mascot is a bald-headed eagle called Baldwin. The team also has a fight song called 'For Boston' that was composed by a student in 1885. The beginnings of the football team can be traced back to 1884 when a series of interclass games were played. In 1892, permission was finally granted to two students to start a varsity football team- one student would be the coach and the other the captain. The team went on to win their first game in 1893. By 1896, the young football team entered into an extremely torrid rivalry with Holy Cross, which dominated much of the beginning of this century. In 1986 the series was terminated after Holy Cross switched leagues and the Eagles had won seventeen of the past twenty games.
Their next heated rivalry would come against Notre Dame, and this series would earn the name 'Holy War' in 1975 as well as produce some of the most memorable moments in the history of college football. The series began in 1992 and will end in 2010 as Notre Dame claimed they needed to free up schedules for the future. However, popular speculation believes that Notre Dame was getting frustrated at the fact that they kept being defeated by a team that many considered not to be a national power.
After a debilitating gambling scandal in 1996, the team could not find its footing again until coach Tom O'Brien entered the scene in 1997, reviving a team that was once lagging badly into a consistent top 25 team. The team has since managed to maintain a respectable win/loss record as well as a number of bowl game victories. In 2004, the Eagles were at the top of the Big East league in a four-way tie. The Eagles also hold the bowl record for having six consecutive victories. The Eagles finished last season with impressive placings in the polls.
