A few seasons ago, the Bears were mediocre at best, pulling in disappointing games but things turned around big time under new coach Jeff Tedford and almost miraculously, the Bears are one of the prime conference title contenders and could well be walking away with the national championships this season.
The Golden Bears football team is part of the athletic program of the University of California. Team colors are blue and gold and the mascot is a bear called Oski. If there's one thing the Bears have, it's a strong tradition of fielding some phenomenal football and of picking themselves up when they were down. If the Bears are the strong and spirited team they are today, it is nothing but sheer hard work and determination that has taken them there and that is a Bears tradition!
Football entered the University of California in the guise of rugby in 1882 and in 1886, football was officially introduced and played. Unfortunately the administration soon decided that the game was far too violent and the sport was banned and replaced by rugby. In 1915 football made a comeback and has been there ever since, with the University fielding a team every season. The Bears have been fortunate enough to go through various stages of great playing, the first of which came in the 1920s which is often referred to as the first golden age. The team went for a mind-boggling fifty games without loss and began to be known as the Wonder Team.
The following decade, the Bears' defense line up was so impressive that it was known as the Thunder Team. But the forties were possibly the best time for the Bears, when Lynn Pappy Waldorf became coach. 'Pappy's Boy's' would go on to win 33 consecutive games, 3 Rose Bowl entries and 3 conference championships.
After a period of less-than-fabulous football where the Bears slipped from mediocre to a 1-10 season record, Jeff Tedford came and completely turned the team around- that too, he did it in a matter of months. Tedford took a team that could only manage a single win in 2001 and turned them into a team that gained consistent winning records, a PAC-10 standing and placings in the top 25 and top 10 polls. Tedford insists this is just the beginning and the team have much bigger things in store as they get ready for the coming season.
