The Golden Knights football team is affiliated to the athletics program of the University of Central Florida. As far as the program itself goes, it is fairly young and had its beginnings in 1979 when the president of the University announced that the football program would be started- the coach joined on a volunteer basis and 148 hopefuls showed up for the very first practice, bringing their own shoes, shirt and shorts as well as $14 a day for room and board. Their first game was a successful win against St. Leo College that same year after which they also played a successful home game against Fort Benning.
In 1982, the team decided to concentrate on playing major college football and moved up to Division II. Unfortunately the following seasons were not very successful and it was not until 1987 that they would finish with a winning record and qualify for the playoffs. The following year the Knights were in the Number 2 spot of the Division rankings. In 1990, the team moved up to the Division I-AA and quickly proved themselves by becoming the first school to qualify for the playoffs in their very first year.
By 1994, the Knights were the pick of Sports Illustrated to win the national championships but a series of injuries slowed the team down greatly. By 1996, the team moved up yet again to the Division I-A and "UCF Golden Knight Football Week" was declared in the Orlando city. The team continued to do well, raking in their best season ever in 1998. By 2001, the Knights finally found a home with the Mid-American Conference and by 2005 the team had established themselves as a force to reckon with. They tied for being the fourth best turnaround team in NCAA history as they went from a score of 0-11 to 8-5. The Knights also clinched the Conference USA East Division title that same year.
