The Bearcats football team is a part of the University of Cincinnati's athletics program. The history of the Bearcats is one that is rich in tradition as it is one of the oldest football programs in the country. Thanks to this history and custom of instilling the very best into their players, the Bearcats have fielded no less than ninety players to the NFL and a number of their coaches have gone on to win honors at the college and professional level.
It was way back in 1885 that the very first Bearcats team was brought into being. In 1888 the team would play the University of Miami in what would be the first in a long and intense rivalry between the two teams. That particular game ended with both teams failing to chalk up any points but that rivalry is now the eighth oldest rivalry in the country and is the eleventh longest running rivalry in the NCAA Division-I league.
In 1898 one of the Bearcats' most famous coaches Frank Cavanaugh would take the reigns- he was well known as the Iron Major, not only for his exploits as a war hero but also for what he did for the team as a coach. Soon the team was clocking in some decent season records and had begun fielding some NFL players as well. In 1947, the team won their first ever Mid-American Conference title, the first of four that they would win during their tenure with the league. By 1953, the Bearcats were at the very pinnacle of form, leading the nation in both offense and defense. In 1996 the team began competing in Conference USA and in 2003 they were invited to join the Big East Conference.
The Bearcats still maintain their winning tradition today as well as their tradition of having exemplary coaches- current head Coach Mark Dantonio became the number two coach in the nation to post the most number of wins in the first year. Needless to say, the Bearcats look poised to post some big wins this season and play some truly exceptional football. Don't miss your chance to watch it all live!
