The Kentucky Wildcats constitutes the men's and women's athletic teams of the University of Kentucky (UK). Earlier the athletes were called Lady Kats. Later in the year 1990, the team was nicknamed as Wildcats. Teams of UK athletic program include football, men's & women's basketball, women's volleyball, baseball, softball, men's & women's cross country, men's & women's swimming/diving, women's gymnastics, men's & women's soccer, men's & women's track & field (indoor & outdoor), men's & women's golf, men's & women's tennis, and the coeducational sport of rifle.
Kentucky men's basketball team won seven NCAA titles under four coaches- Adolph Rupp - 1948, 1949, 1951 and 1958, Joe B. Hall – 1978, Rick Pitino – 1996, and Tubby Smith - 1998.
The football team could not make it to any successful championships titles. Yet, they played against many of the top college football programs in the nation. The baseball program played many matches against many good teams, but because of the hot weather they could not won most of it. Coach Keith Madison- who was the long time coach of the team- retired, and Kentucky team hired Florida assistant John Cohen as head coach. He led the team to a winning overall season in 2005.
The Kentucky cheerleaders have won the UCA Division I-A Cheerleading Championship 15 times, which any other school could not. Kentucky won each year from 1995 to 2002 and from 2004 to 2006. more than any other school. They have won championships in 1985, 1987, 1988, 1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006. They are the only school to win more than two consecutive championship.
