Maine Black Bears is the official athlete team of University of Maine which was founded in the year 1862 by an act signed by president Lincoln. University of Maine was earlier known as Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts, the Maine College changed its name in 1897. University of Maine is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference for football, Hockey East for ice hockey, and the America East Conference for all other sports. Maine Black Bears comprises many sports like Men's ice hockey, Football, Women's Ice Hockey, Baseball etc. The team has won two national championships both in men's ice hockey in 1993 and 1999.

The University of Maine men's ice hockey team will start the 2006-07 season in the Hall of Fame game against Minnesota at the Xcel Energy Center. This would be their eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. "I am excited about the schedule for the 2006-07 season," said men's head coach Tim Whitehead. "We look forward to opening with Minnesota in the Xcel Center. Bemidji State will be a strong opponent for the home opener, and the trip to North Dakota will be an early test as well. The Hockey East schedule will be difficult as always, with great series against our rivals." The first pre-season honor for the University of Maine football program was announced as senior defensive tackle Mike DeVito (Wellfleet, Mass.) was named to the 2006 Sports Network Pre-season All-America Second-Team. He was the only defensive lineman from the Atlantic 10 Football Conference to be named a preseason All-American.

The University of Maine women's ice hockey team will face the toughest schedule in program history during the 2006-07 season. Maine will also face New Hampshire, St. Lawrence and Minnesota. "This is by far the strongest schedule ever for the women's ice hockey program at Maine," said women's head coach Guy Perron. "Many of the games will be against teams that finished in the top ten last season, including New Hampshire who was first for most of last season. Our strength of schedule should be a good challenge for our team. In order to be the best, you have to play the best, which we are going to do this season."

The University of Maine baseball program will host a Maine Baseball Weekend. The weekend will feature a golf outing, a reception, the retirement of Mike Bordick's number 3 and an alumni baseball game. "I am very excited to help organize a great weekend surrounding the tradition of UMaine Baseball," said Maine head coach Steve Trimper. "Our goal is to keep many former ballplayers in touch with the program that they helped establish. I think that the events planned for the weekend will be a great way to accomplish this."
