Six times the Gophers have been crowned National football Champions: 1934, 1935, 1936, 1940, 1941, & 1960. The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher football program has amassed 18 conference titles, six national championships, a Heisman Trophy winner and 66 first-team All-Americans. Minnesota football history was made on Sept. 29, 1882, when Minnesota played Hamline at the Col. King State Fairgrounds in South Minneapolis. In the fall of 1883, Peebles became the first head football coach at the University of Minnesota. Alfred Pillsbury was one of the founders of football at Minnesota. Minnesota recorded an undefeated season in 1892, playing future Big Ten opponents Michigan and Northwestern that season. That year the team won its first-ever conference title, in the Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the Northwest.

The school has held national championships in men's hockey in 2002 and 2003, in women's hockey in 2004 and 2005, in wrestling 2001 and 2002 and in men's golf in 2002.
