Prior to that Mike Anderson was the head coach of the team. The Mizzou football coach with the most wins was Dan Devine while the men's basketball coach with the most wins was Norm Stewart, an MU alumnae.

The Missouri Tigers won nine Big Eight Conference regular-season championships under the coach Norm Stewart, who once was an American college basketball coach.
The nickname "Tigers," was given during the Civil War period. The origin of the word can be traced back to armed guard of Columbia citizens formed to protect guerrilla attack. The team was called "The Missouri Tigers." In 1890 just after forming the Missouri's first football team the athletic committee took the nickname "Tiger" in recognition of those Civil War defenders.
MU mascot today embodies the spirit - "Truman the Tiger." Named for President of the United State Harry S. Truman. The mascot performs at all MU games.
