The athletic teams of Montana University is nicknamed as Montana Grizzlies. Montana Grizzlies was a member of the Pacific Coast Conference from 1924 to 1950. Grizzlies have demonstrated themselves as one of the top football teams in both the Big Sky Conference and in NCAA Division I-AA. The football team has done very well in the past few years.
They have won or shared 11 of the last 16 Big Sky football championships since 1990. They won the National Championship in 1995 and 2001 and went to it in 1996, 2000 and 2004.The University of Montana Lady Griz are on the top of their game. At every Grizzly football game there are more than 23,000 people filling the stands with the new addition to the stadium.
In recent years, the men's basketball team has emerged as a power in the big sky. The men's basketball team was the conference representative to the NCAA Division I Men's basketball tournament in 2005 and 2006. The women's basketball team "Lady Griz" is also the most successful team in the Big Sky conference. Lady Griz have won 16 conference titles in 24 years, most recently in 2005. The team has completed in the NCAA Women's tournament sixteen times. The won in total six matches. The Lady Griz are regularly in the top 30 nationally in attendance for NCAA women's basketball.
