New Mexico State University's (NMSU) teams are named as Aggies. NMSU compete in the Western Athletic Conference. Their mascot earlier known as "Pistol Pete", was redesigned in 2005 as part of the university's plan. Today, the mascot is known simply as "Pete," whose pistol has been replaced with a lasso. NMSU's colors are crimson and white.

NMSU started out primarily as an agricultural school. Started in 1888 and were long known as the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. Now New Mexico State is a major university. But for many years, NMSU was one of the few schools in the country with separate nicknames for its men's and women's teams. Men's teams were known as the Aggies while the women's teams were known as the Roadrunners. When the women's program first began at NMSU, it was a separate entity from the men's athletic department, and thus, decided on a different mascot. When the two departments merged in the 1970s, Roadrunners was kept as the women's nickname. Today, all NCAA athletic teams at NMSU are proudly called "Aggies."

New Mexico State forward Tyrone Nelson was honored Monday as the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the week. Nelson overcame a case of the flu and scored a career-high 31 points to lead the Aggies to a 74-72 victory over Texas-San Antonio on Dec. 20.

The new era officially began Monday when NMSU introduced the soon-to-be Pitino former assistant as the Aggies' new head coach."He has the total package," Pitino, who has Louisville in the Final Four, said in a prepared statement issued by NMSU. "He's got great charisma, is a terrific teacher and he has two of the most important things it takes to be a head coach: he's very dedicated and he can bring in great players."

Theus said the two seasons he spent as Pitino's chief recruiter have prepared him for his first Division I head coaching job and he plans to borrow from Pitino's play book. "I'll be taking a page out of a lot of his books," Theus said. Point guard Shaun Davis joins New Mexico State's basketball team coach Reggie Theus said Wednesday. Theus said the Aggies "got very lucky" to land Davis. "He is obviously a kid that has been recruited on a high level," he said. "Not only is he fast and can penetrate into the defense, he can also put the ball in the basket. This is a kid that has a great upside and could be a tremendous player for us."
