The organization's MOU and its By-Laws states that the "purpose of The Foundation is to develop gifts and manage assets for the benefit of the Norfolk State University Intercollegiate Athletics program, its educational program, facilities, students and staff. The Foundation is organized exclusively for charitable, educational purposes of Norfolk State University. The Foundation is empowered to "encourage, solicit, receive, manage, administer, control, invest, and disburse contributions, gifts grants, bequests, and transfers of funds or property of any nature, and carry out the wishes and see that the property and so received are applied to the uses specified by the donors."
The Athletics Foundation of Norfolk State University has played an important role in the development of the NSU Athletics Program. The former Executive Director was Malverse Nicholson. Because of the efforts of Nicholson and The Foundation, the athletics program produced championship teams and a multitude of outstanding student athletes.
