The Oklahoma State Cowboys are a part of the athletics program of Oklahoma State University. Their colors are orange and black and their mascot is Pistol Pete. The Cowboys have a football tradition that dates back to when the university was known as Oklahoma A&M. Though an incredibly spirited team, the Cowboys only reached the pinnacle of playing success in the eighties under Coach Pat Jones. At the time the team boasted of players like Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders and this winning setup led to the Cowboys acquiring the nickname Tailback U.
The Cowboys share a number of rivalries but without a doubt their most intense rivalry is shared with The University of Oklahoma Sooners. As with most intense school rivalries, this one spills into all forms of sport and in recent times, the Series has become much more formalized after the entry of some corporate sponsors. Of all the individual sports rivalries, the one with the most unique beginning would have to be football. The day the first match was played was a cold one, with a nearby creek being almost frozen. At one point in the game, the ball got caught in the wind- if the Sooners could get it, it would be a touchdown. The ball fell into the icy creek but since a touchdown was at stake, both team members dived in after it, thus setting the trend for the kind of games that would come in the future.
Currently, the Cowboys are not in the best of form, winding up at the bottom of the pile in 2005. But Coach Gundy has already taken strict measures in order to shape the team up, bring its strengths to the fore and iron out its weaknesses.
