The Ole Miss Rebels are the football team affiliated with the athletics program of the University of Mississippi. Their college colors are navy blue and crimson and these colors were chosen to purposely mirror the colors of Yale and Harvard. The program of late has been working extensively in order to break any connotations people may draw with Ole Miss and negative depictions of the Confederacy. As a result, no Confederate flags symbols are allowed in the offices and Confederate flags are discouraged at games. The management has also done away with their old mascot Colonel Reb and held a contest in order to choose a new mascot. However, there was a limited fan response and taunts from rival fans resulted in the contest being abandoned. As a result, Ole Miss currently has no mascot. The Rebels' fight song is 'Forward Rebels' and its cheer is 'Hot Toddy'.
The Rebels share a rivalry with the Louisiana Bulldogs and this is celebrated at the end of each football season with a game called the Egg Bowl, the trophy of which is the Golden Egg Trophy. There has been one particular family that has had a great impact on Rebels football and that is the Manning Family. Archie Manning was a football star in the sixties and he has had a tremendous influence on the school. His son Eli would return some years later and lead the Rebels to their first ten win in season in thirty years in 2003.
After the Cotton Bowl victory in 2003, Rebels football has sadly stagnated with the team bringing in some of their worst plays of late, especially in 2005. However Coach Ed Orgeron has done some major spring cleaning this season, bringing in two new assistants from Miami to help build up the flagging offense. Orgeron is known for building strong defensive teams so with this combination, it looks like the Rebels might be on their way up this season. Added to this arsenal is possibly one of the best linebackers in the circuit Patrick Willis as well as a host of new talent that is young but raring to go.
There's guaranteed to be some solid football action so don't wait- get to your online ticket vendor now and order your tickets to see the Ole Miss Rebels live in action!
