The Beavers football team is part of the athletics program at the Oregon State University. Their team mascot is a beaver called Benny the Beaver and they are perhaps best known for the rivalry they share with the Oregon Ducks. The Beavers are undoubtedly one of the strongest teams on the college football circuit today and they have a history of being one of the best. Since its inception in 1893, the Beavers have delivered almost one hundred players to the NFL. Since the beginning of the new millennium, this number has surged as the Beavers have become a dominant force in most of the bowl games in recent seasons.
Perhaps the most enviable record and one that symbolizes the grit, drive and determination of the Beavers is the record they have for coming up victorious against the biggest point spread in the history of the NCAA. The game was a memorable one, held in 1985 against the Huskies. Added to the 38 points in Washington's favor was a an injured Beavers quarterback but the team surged to an astounding 21-20 victory in what has been hailed as one of the biggest upsets in college football history.
The Beavers share a rousing, intense and long standing rivalry with the Oregon Ducks known as the Civil War. Though this technically refers to all their rivalries since they are not confined to just football, the term Civil War is usually used to refer to the football rivalry and the annual game that is played between the two teams. This rivalry began in 1894 and is the seventh longest running rivalry in the nation and the second oldest rivalry in the west coast area. The games alternate between the home stadiums of the two teams and at one point, the game had a trophy. This was a platypus carved out of maple, the platypus representing both the beaver and duck. The trophy was used from 1959 to 1962 after which it mysteriously disappeared. It was recently found in a closet in the University of Oregon and steps are being taken to start the tradition once again.
