Wondering what that deafening roar in the distance is? Why it's the Penn State Nittany Lions showing what they're made of on the football field and you can catch all of the exciting action with tickets to see the Penn State Nittany Lions play live! Undoubtedly one of the most exciting teams on the circuit today, the Lions have proved that they are among the kings of the circuit with their astounding 2005 season record. For all those people who that is was just a fluke, wait till you hear these Lions roar this season.
The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is part of the Pennsylvania State University athletics program. The team colors were once dark pink and black, a color combination that was chosen way back in 1887 by a student committee. However it was soon discovered that the pink on the uniforms quickly faded to white in the sun. Rather than have a black and white uniform color combination, the students decided to use blue and white instead and they have been the college colors ever since.
The team mascot is a mountain lion which once roamed the central Pennsylvania area. The idea for a lion was decided back in 1906 when a student was inspired by the tiger mascot that was present at Princeton. The lion is known as the Nittany Lion since the university lies in the Nittany Valley at the foot of Mount Nttany. In 1942 a shrine with a sculpture of the lion was presented to the university by the graduating class of 1940.
The Lions come from an old and long tradition of college football and have played some memorable games, managing to snag the national championships in 1982 and in 1986. However the new millennium wasn't as kind to the Lions, with their 2002 season finding them going from a 9-4 record to a 3-9 and then a 4-7. Along with this losing record came a more damaging trend and that was a loss of confidence in the players themselves- Lions football was beginning to look very bleak indeed.
And then 2005 happened. Contrary to almost everyone's expectations, the Lions managed to win five out six incredibly close games. Fluke? Absolutely not. All that happened was that the Lions finally started to not only believe in themselves, they realized their potential as a team and saw that the possibility of the Lions contending for a national championship was not an impossible one. With the help of Coach Paterno and some truly talented players, the Lions are looking to re-assert themselves as the king of the football field and by the looks of it, they just might do it.
