If you like to see things get heated up on the football field, then you need to grab your tickets to see the Purdue Boilermakers play some live action college football. The Boilermakers come from a long line of intense football action and they are ready to shake off the slump they have been in for some time. Coach Tiller has taken a very hard line this season, adding new faces and shaking up both the team and his staff. The result should be some sizzling football action like never before.

The Purdue Boilermakers football team is a part of the athletics program of the University of Purdue. Their colors are old gold and black and their mascot is an old locomotive known as The Boilermaker Special. Their rather unique and odd name dates back to 1891 when the Purdue team pulverized rival school Wabash College with a 44-0 victory. The press in Crawfordville, where the game was played, referred to Purdue as Boiler Makers. The Purdue press did not take to this too kindly and refuted the same in a following headline. Still, for some reason the name stuck. The team was gone through a number of names including Foundry Hands, Rail Splitters, Blacksmiths, Cornfield Sailors, Pumpkin Shuckers and Grangers- it was Boilermakers that finally made the cut.

The team started out as an Independent team before joining the Big 10 conference in 1896. Over the years, the Boilermakers have snagged no less than seven conference title wins and two Rose Bowl entry tickets, one of which they won in 1967. In keeping with this winning tradition, the Boilermakers are also known as the Cradle of Quarterbacks, producing such great players as Kyle Orton, Jim Everett, Bob Griese, Drew Brees, Mark Herrmann and Len Dawson.

In terms of rivalries, the Boilermakers share rivalries with the University of Notre Dame's Fighting Irish for the Shillelagh trophy and the University of Illinois for the Purdue Cannon Trophy. However the Boilermakers' main rivalry is shared with the Indiana University Hoosiers with whom they butt heads with for the annual Old Oaken Bucket.

Needless to say, things don't look very good for the Boilermakers right now since their last season wasn't too hot. Much of the problem lay with their defense which was unstable and unable to find their groove. However Coach Tiller has made a lot of changes to the staff and players and has taken a hard line against any kind of selfish attitudes among anyone, player or staff. He is looking to pull the team together and make it work as a team and he will stop at nothing to do it.
