It's time to see college football get the royal treatment with some exemplary football action from the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and there's no time like the present to grab your tickets to see this team play. There are a lot of good reasons to come out and watch the Knights play but the best reason is probably that this is a team is moving up. The Knights have been slowly and steadily making their presence felt and after firmly pulling themselves out of a playing slump that has lasted a number of years, the Knights have now set the bar a little higher and are now aiming for some big wins.

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team is affiliated to the Rutgers University athletics program. Rutgers University itself is one of the very first American colleges to take part in intercollegiate athletics. More importantly, Rutgers University is considered to be the Birthplace of College Football. The very first game of intercollegiate football was played on Rutgers grounds between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869 with Rutgers emerging victorious. The ground on which they played on now houses a gymnasium.

An interesting point to note is that football in 1869 was much closer to soccer. By the 1870s the rules had become modified so that the game resembled rugby and it is this which evolved into modern American football. The mascot of the team was initially a fighting bird known as the Chanticleer, but the bird seemed to resemble a chicken to many people. In the 1950s, a new mascot was decided upon in order to boost athletics morale and thus the Scarlet Knight was born.

The Knights have been in a bit of a playing slump for a while, unable to rake up a decent season record since 1992- no doubt this stung for a school that was the birthplace of college football. But the Knights are now firmly on the way to regain their past glory. The Knights have managed to attain two great feats- they broke their slump and landed a winning season and also gained a bowl game ticket, their first in twenty-eight years. This no doubt was the hard part- breaking a nagging losing streak and regaining confidence as a team is an important step but the Knights are about to take this one step further.

As Coach Schiano says, one must embrace rising expectation levels- if you don't you will never get anywhere. This is exactly what the Knights are doing; they now are working towards bigger wins and perhaps some championship opportunities as well. With the current line up this is certainly not an impossible feat to accomplish.
