The Samford University Bulldogs football team is part of the athletics program of Samford University. Their colors are red and blue, a combination that dates back to when the University was known as Howard College. The red tends to be bright while the blue is a navy blue- most students seem to have an affiliation to the red rather than the blue. Their mascot is a bulldog named Spike, who is distinguished by his spiked collar and intimidating growl. With respect to rivalries, the Bulldogs share a number of intense rivalries, mainly due to the fact that they are the only private school in the Ohio Valley conference. As a result, the Bulldogs are often at loggerheads with a number of state schools. They also share a rivalry with Birmingham-Southern College, though it hasn't spilled into football yet since the latter does not have a team. The Bulldogs are also known to take on powerhouse teams like Auburn and Alabama and give them all a royal run for their money.
One interesting aspect of Bulldog football is a tradition that exists even today, especially among the Greek students. This consists of many of the men wearing ties and jackets and the women wearing sundresses for the games- the tailgate events are also very popular as the football games are almost always a popular social event as well.
It is a well-known fact that Bulldog football has grown to be a rather powerful force in recent years. The Bulldogs have an impressive bowl playoff record of 4-3-1 and have made appearances in the postseason games for six years, making their last appearance in 1992. Last season, the Bulldogs finished things off with a close 5-6 season record. This time, the team is ready to take their game up a notch and clinch a winning season, apart from trying to gain another shot at the post season games. If the Bulldogs can play at the top of their game, there's a good chance that these boys will be making some truly impressive wins this season.
