Say a prayer for the Spartans- not because they need it to win but because they need it to stay alive. The Spartan football program could be on the verge of shutting down and you can help save it buy getting your tickets to see the San Jose State Spartans play live. But why, you may ask, since the Spartans are not exactly known to play exemplary football. Call it the instinct to survive- in the face of an uncertain future, Spartan football has made a drastic turnaround and the team is now a strong contender in the Western Atlantic Conference.
The San Jose State Spartans football team is part of the athletics program at the San Jose State University. Their colors are blue and gold and their mascot is a Spartan warrior. The school has a rich athletic tradition and has participated in intercollegiate athletics since 1890. The very first football team was fielded in 1892 and the team can boast of a number of football greats like Courtney Anderson, Bill Walsh, Steve DeBerg, Dick Vermeil and Jeff Garcia.
But that's about where the greatness of Spartan football ends. Unlike the other athletic programs at the university, the football has never managed to prove itself in any way. The Spartans also have the dubious distinction of almost always ranking near the bottom of the barrel when it comes to performance and audience attendance. In the last fifteen years the team has only managed to chalk up a solitary winning season. In 2003, a vote was taken to do away with the program completely and a number of insiders have already written off the Spartans.
But not everyone has given up hope- there has been a good amount of pressure to retain the Spartans football team and in an effort to turn its fortunes around, Coach Dick Tomey was called in to help sort things out and get things going. Tomey is known for his amazing work with teams like Hawaii and Arizona and many people are hoping he can work the same magic for San Jose. Despite having a 3-8 season record last year, the Spartans are definitely on the move up, winning their last two games of that season- a first in nearly a decade. Their other losses have been by less than seven points. This is an immense feat and is proof of the kind of effort that the Spartans have been putting into their game to prove that they do not deserve to be written off. Something new is being born in the Spartan football team of today and if given a chance, this football team could prove to be a surprise to everyone.
