The South Carolina State Bulldogs football team is part of the South Carolina State University athletics program. The Bulldogs are a truly stellar winning team, having the most number of conference title wins than any other team in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference. The team also has three of the prestigious Black College Football National Championship titles, a testament to the grit, drive and determination of this team. The Bulldogs do not take anything sitting down- they play every game with everything they got- even if things don't seem to be going their way, you can be sure that the Bulldogs will put up one hell of a fight.
Possibly one of the biggest and most memorable wins that the Bulldogs have ever chalked up was during a season that many people view as the golden season of the Bulldogs. The year was 1994 and the head coach was none other than the legendary Willie Jeffries. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs claimed an incredible 10-2 season record. Perhaps the icing on the cake was the Bulldogs' astounding victory over Grambling State University who at the time was under the famous Eddie Robinson. The Bulldogs beat Grambling State in an exciting 31-27 game that won the team their latest Black College Football National Championship title- a sweet victory indeed.
Of late the Bulldogs have had a run of bad luck- that's really all one can say considering that the team pulled in a fabulous 9-2 season record and still failed to qualify for a place in the playoffs. This has less to do with the team's ability and more to do with the politics of how teams are chosen for the playoffs and more importantly, it has to do with the cause and effect chain that ignites when a team wins or loses. This year probably smarts all the more considering that it was the closest the Bulldogs had come to the post season games in 23 years. Added to that is the fact that the Bulldogs had a league mark of 7-1, second only the Hampton.
