The famous Southern Methodist University is a prestigious private, coeducational university situated in University Park, Texas which incidentally is an enclave of Dallas. The University came into existence in the year 1911 under the aegis of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The university currently operates sprawling campuses in Dallas, Plano and even in New Mexico. The University is currently owned by the reputed South Central Jurisdiction functionaries of the Methodist Church. The SMU has an excellent football program and the team is commonly known as SMU mustangs. The Mustangs are a force to reckon with in the NCAA division. Over the year the SMU football program has been a national powerhouse. It has the distinction of having five alumni being successfully elected to the famed Pro Football Hall of Fame. They include the remarkable Raymond Berry, Eric Dickerson the talented Forrest Gregg along with Lamar Hunt (in the role of a contributor), and the legendary Doak Walker. Unfortunately SMU has once received the "death penalty" for multiple violations of NCAA rules in its days when it was a prominent member of the Southwest Conference. However since the team has recovered its glory and looking forward to an exciting season ahead. The Mascot of the Mustangs is among the most easily recognized ones.
The famous SMU Mustang mascot originally came into being when the visionary President Hyer's assistant once innocuously remarked that the powerful SMU football players looked similar to "bunch of wild mustangs." Since then the term "Mustangs" was made official after it was put to a student vote. The SMU has rich football tradition.
During the afternoon before each home football match, SMU students, staff along with their alumni gather along the famous Bishop Boulevard which is incidentally SMU's main street for elaborate pre-game festivities. Towards the North end of the Boulevard tents of student organizations are located which includes just about every fraternity and nearly each sorority on campus. Many tents apparently offer free food and drinks. Some fraternities even hire bartenders to serve visitors who are 21 and older. In the beautiful South end of the famed Boulevard is known to usually host numerous tents of alumni groups along with groups from various prominent departments of the school. In the North of the Boulevard, tailgaters from the opposing team are placed.
