The university also is popular for it famous athletic teams.Tennessee regularly competes in the Southeastern Conference's competitive Eastern Division with sides like Florida, Georgia, Kentucky and successfully competes in exciting longstanding football rivalries with nearly all of them along. The Volunteers performed superbly to win the NCAA Division IA National Championship in the year 1998 in football. They have with a talented coach in Phillip Fulmer. It is home to University of Tennessee reputed football team, the Volunteers. The stadium has seating capacity over 107,000 people and is among the country's largest facilities of its kind. The stadium is in process of a major renovation which is costing over $100 million and lot of work has already been completed. The field upon which the magnificent stadium stands was initially bought in the year 1921 and was then named Shields-Watkins Field in honor of Col. W.S. Shields and his remarkable wife Alice Watkins-Shields, who were responsible for providing the initial capital required for the purchase. The stadium was named after General Robert R. Neyland who incidentally was head football coach at the university from 1926 to 1952 and also served as a visionary athletic director for ten years
The football teams most glorious days came under the charismatic Fulmer who was the 20th head football coach at the university. Fulmer rapidly turned Tennessee into a major national power from the year 1993 to the year 1998, when he was instrumental in winning the first ever BCS National Championship Game. Fulmer's splendid transformation of the then staid Tennessee's program came under the constrain of a sparse in-state base for recruiting players. Many analysts still continue to praise him as among the game's top salesmen. Even with his success, controversy dogged Fulmer as rival schools questioned his recruiting tactics and numerous players were arrested for off-the-field incidents.
